Skin Care and AstaxanthinSkin care normally involves the care of the skin through the use of various products and techniques so as to ensure that the skin looks young and fresh. In accordance to this kind of care, there are many products that are available in the market specifically aimed at achieving this.

These products can be traditional home made products commonly made from herbs and plants or can be commercially manufactured products.

History of skin care

Contrary to popular belief, skin care did not emerge in the recent past; in fact skin care has been practiced for thousands of years in many parts of the world. The best example of this is ancient Egypt where there is archeological evidence of the practice of skin care as far back as 3500 BC[1]. The cosmetics used during these period contained toxic substances such as mercury and lead. Ancient Greeks and Romans have also been documented as having used some forms of skin care[2].

Sun blocking - Weather elements are some of the biggest deterrents when it comes to a healthy skin. This because these weather elements are instrumental in dehydration of the skin and can even makes the skin to appear patchy and dry. Normally, the skin requires some amount of sunshine for it to be healthy and glowing. But over exposure to the sun rays can be very dangerous as the sun contains ultra violet rays that can be harmful to the skin. There are certain skin products available in the market that can help to block out the UV rays of the sun. Astaxanthin has been proven beneficial for skin care in this area.

Moisturizing - The chief cause of bad skin is skin dehydration. Therefore the skin needs to be moisturized on a daily basis so as to enable the skin to rejuvenate naturally. There are many skin care products in the market which are able to do this. Pyrolidone Carboxylic Acid, or PCA for short, is created naturally in the skin via enzymes that convert glutamic acid to NaPCA. NaPCA is the most effective and important non-toxic humectant known to exist. If there is not enough NaPCA in the skin he moisture level of the skin will decrease and adverse issue will occur.

Not only should you look at moisturizing your skin, you should also ensure you are drinking enough waste every day. Water makes up sixty percent of our body weight. It is the primary 'chemical' of the body. Everything your body does depends on water. It helps distribute vital nutrients, eliminates toxins and keeps important parts of our body's moist[3]. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies stated that "women who appear to be adequately hydrated consume an average of approximately 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water" and "men average approximately 3.7 liters (125 ounces) daily[4]."

Anti Aging - Some skin care products contain compounds that have antioxidant properties, these compounds are very important as they have got anti aging properties. Beta 1, 3-D glucan has been shown to have powerful skin related anti-aging properties. It helps support the white blood cells of the skin, which are called the “Langerhans” cells. These cells assist in the elimination of dead cells and protect against skin damage from photo-aging. They also promote growth of new skin cells and the reduction of wrinkles.  

Exfoliating - The skin is one of the largest organs in the bodies. As such it acts as a tool for removing waste material from the body; this waste material like sweat can be instrumental in clogging of pores. Exfoliation of the skin with certain skin care products can be instrumental in unclogging these pores and removal of dead ski so as to enable an individual have a healthy skin.

Skin types are usually classified into two; dry skin and oily skin. As such there are many products in the market that have been designed specifically for these types of skin and it is generally recommended that an individual uses a product that is specified for his or her skin type.
